Garden/Kitchen news

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that East Devonport Primary School has won the National Prize for the “Recipe of the Imagination” in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Awards for 2025!

Our winning creation, the “Cheesy Beet Burgers,” has made its mark across Australia—showcasing not only our students’ creativity but also the power of seasonal produce and teamwork. We adapted a recipe, ensured it was inclusive of all dietary needs, and even created a variation—“Cheesy Beet Balls”—which became an even bigger hit than the original!

This achievement is a testament to the dedication of our students, the strength of our Kitchen Garden Program, and the collaborative spirit of our entire school community. Special thanks go to Mr Jago, and to our incredible staff who support these hands-on learning experiences every day.

We are deeply grateful to General Mills for sponsoring our prize package, and to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation for their ongoing support—not just for us, but for all finalists across the country.

This win wouldn’t have been possible without the small but mighty contributions from across our school: the school lunch program that made “burger day” a reality, and the breakfast club who saved every loaf end so we could make our own breadcrumbs. It’s the little things that make the biggest difference.

Who would have thought the humble silverbeet could shine so brightly? Golden, in fact!

A heartfelt thank you to Cassie Smith, who has worked tirelessly to grow and lead our Kitchen Garden Program and proudly represented East Devonport Primary School at the national awards event in Adelaide. Her commitment and creativity have helped bring this vision to life.

Thank you to everyone who played a part in this journey. We’re proud to represent Tasmania on the national stage—and even prouder of the creativity, care, and community that made it happen.
