Another term is about to end and we are half way through the school year. I would like to acknowledge our parents and carers who have had a sick child or children this term. Hopefully the illnesses doing the rounds in the North West/Devonport region presently, have finished and we can have everyone back at school, every day for term 3.
Parent Teacher
Summative reports went out last Friday for students in Prep to Year 6. This Wednesday, parent/teacher meetings commence, with meeting on Thursday and the following Monday and Tuesday. During this time, parents may be contacted regarding attendance issues by their child’s home room teacher. Mrs Karen Whish-Wilson and myself will be meeting with parents regarding attendance issue that have attracted a 15 day letter of unauthorised absences.
Staff out in term 3
I would like to wish Mrs Wendy Steven and Mrs Karen Graham, who are both taking Long Service Leave for all of term 3. I wish them safe travel on their respectively holidays and look forward to hearing about their adventures when they return for term 4.
New Play Equipment
Work has begun on our new play equipment. We are installing 4 swing sets. This will be used by the Prep - Year 2 students. Swings have been a popular request from the students. We acknowledge that the year 3-6 students also wish to have a swing set, however, we need to raise funds for this to occur.
School Holidays
I wish every one a relaxing end of term holiday. Term 2 finishes on Friday July 7th and term 3 starts on Tuesday 25th of July (Monday 24th is a student Free day)
In Term 2, the Early Years classes have been learning about Materials in Chemical Science. Some of the activities we have undertaken have included:
- Actions
- Mixing and making
- Changes through cooling, warming and mixing
- Bouyancy
- Absorbancy
- Recycling
- Properties
- Textures
- Comparing
- Materials hunt
We were lucky enough to have an exciting opportunity in our school this week and next. Jack Anders from AFL Tas, will be taking sessions in our PE lessons to assist us in enhancing our skill development in this thrilling sport. With his expertise and guidance, our students will have the opportunity to learn and refine essential techniques, such as kicking, handballing, marking, and game play. As you can see by the photos, the students are enjoying this fantastic experience with AFL Tas and the valuable skills and knowledge that they are gaining through their visit.
Students in 4-5 Sherriff have been set several different challenges recently:
- Design a chair that could hold a zebra for 15 seconds
- The Paper Chain Challenge
On behalf of the SRC Executive we would like to thank everyone who participated in Winter Woollies Day. We managed to make a little over $180 for the school. We would also like to thank and farewell all the student teachers who have been working with us this term. Goodluck with your future studies and future teaching.
By Shelby on behalf of the SRC Executive.
Next week is NAIDOC Week and the 2023 Theme is "For Our Elders".
Across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. They are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and our loved ones.
We acknowledge our loved ones who pick us up in our low moments and celebrate us in our high ones. Who cook us a feed to comfort us and pull us into line, when we need them to. They guide our generations and pave the way for us to take the paths we can take today. Guidance, not only through generations of advocacy and activism, but in everyday life and how to place ourselves in the world.
As part of this week students from Year 5-6 will be attending a special flag raising ceremony at TIAGARRA Museum on Monday 3 July. Hellen Gower, our Indigenous Education Worker has been visiting classes with a colouring competition.
End of term House Acknowledgement
This Friday will be the last thumbs up draw for the term which will decide which house will win the end of term acknowledgement afternoon. This will be held next Wednesday after lunch where the winning house can wear their house colours to school. At the moment Spirit house is leading. The winning house will be announced via Facebook Friday .

On Friday, local businessman, Rotarian and historian Mr John Stuart gave an interesting and informative talk to our year 5 and year 6 students about the history of East Devonport. Students from Andrew's Creek Primary also joined us. Mr Stuart had also planned to walk the students around the new Heritage Trail but was unfortunately cancelled due to the inclement weather. The Rotary Club provided a beautiful barbecue enjoyed by the whole school after Mr Stuart's presentation. We would like to thank the Devonport South East Rotary for organising this event and the barbeque our students thoroughly enjoyed.
The Heritage Trail starts at Pioneer Park and finishes at Tea Tree Lane. Walking this would be a great school holiday adventure for the family.
The whole school attendance is at a low of just 73 percent reflective of the nasty colds going around. This is why it is so important to send your child to school every day when they are well so their schooling isn't impacted when they are truly unwell. Well done to Mrs Crossin and Mr Dolbey's classes who had two days each with 100 percent!
Some of our senior Children's University students have been involved in a project in conjunction with Tasmanian Government House who asked the students to replicate photos using paint. The finished products will be sent to Government House next week where they will be displayed. Here are some of the paintings.
Jesse from CU will be here Friday so students please bring any work to be signed off then. Remember there are heaps of projects the CU students can access via the online portal.
In Kinder we have been focusing on counting and creating patterns with Miss Carter. We have been engaged in lots of hands on activities to practice. We have been doing group work and rotations which is something we will do when we go to prep, so we have started practicing already!
Come and join us for our Pre-Kinder Program Wednesday 1:30 to 2:30 in the LIL Early Learning Room @ East Devonport Primary
- Meet other families
- Get to know our school staff
- Get ready for school by learning through play
When attending Pre-Kinder, please pack a small bag for your child with a water bottle, hat and a piece of fruit. This will help your child to become familiar with some school routines and help to build some important self-help skills.
Upcoming Pre-Kinder Activities (Term 2):
- 28th June – Dear Zoo
- 5th July – Christmas in July
At the conclusion of our Pre-Kinder sessions, please feel free to wander down to the CFLC for Stories on the Lawn at 2:30pm.
Enrolment Forms: Every child who attends Pre-Kinder is required to have an enrolment form. Please ask staff about a form if you have not filled one out.
Students in Year 6 enjoyed a fun and squishy Science lesson recently in the form of the Marshmallow Catapault Challenge. Using jumbo marshmallows students created and then fired their catapaults in the classroom.
Every Monday afternoon the fantastic Mr Elliott joins us at school and works with a small number of interested students to expand their skills with brass instruments.
We have had a busy, but wonderful second term in Year 1S including an excursion to the Paranaple Centre, a visit from Speedy and Lily the Guinea Pigs, a talk from Bright Sparks, and lots of hard work from all students within their learning.
On Wednesday the 14th of June, the brain boot campers went to Narawntapu National Park, we took a hike to Archers Knob.
On the walk we found a lot of cool things like yellow worms, a witchetty grub and some cool mushrooms.
When we got to the top, we had a little treat for making it and then we took some pictures, and we could even see the bus from the top (it was really small). We saw lots of animals like cool birds and some wallabies that we thought were kangaroos.
We had so much fun at the National Park.
By Dakota
At brain boot camp on the 14 of June we went on a bush walk. We found some amazing stuff, we found 3-4 yellow worms and a grub, and we had so much fun. Once we got to the top, we were so red and puffed out, so we had a few photos and went back down. Trinity got a really bad blood nose, but it stopped, then we headed back to the bus and went back to school.

We have been super busy in 3M and very lucky to have the support of two wonderful UTAS teaching students in the classroom, Miss Woods and Miss Bissett. Thankyou for all your support and teaching in 3M. The students have appreciated your presence and you will be deeply missed. We wish you all the best for your future teaching and studies.
- Donut Writing and Donut Design Creations: students worked really hard to write a persuasive donut text, and then created the donuts
- STEM with Miss Bissett: Students had to experiment and explore different ways to join and assemble a tower using different materials.
- Students developing their team work to construct a tower using spaghetti, tape and string to hold one marshmallow on top.
- Science experiment with Miss Woods: 'Making honey how bees do'.
In Digital Technology for the Early Years we have been learning about Algorithms and Coding. We wrote an algorithm (a simple sequence of steps with 1 instruction per step) for a jam sandwich and then got our partner to make it. We have been looking at arrows and directions for coding and have begun looking at coding using Scratch Junior.
5CW have seen great successes over the past three weeks. Students can now easily put together a 100-piece jigsaw puzzle and are looking forward to some that are more difficult next term. Zeak and Zaiha show some of the amazing jigsaws that have been mastered.
On Friday 16th June 5CW joined their buddy class, Prep/1 Clinton, for some Friday afternoon fun. Both classes joined Bluey in some simple dance moves then up the ante and tried to follow the moves to the Ghost Busters song.
Students had an opportunity to be a little creative with playdough and compete in the Lego challenge. Some creative students used playdough to make life like animals like the cat made by Maddison.
The Lego challenge was to see who could make the longest length of Lego that could be lifted by Mrs Crossin without breaking. Sadiq, Adam, Dakota and Zaiha won the challenge creating a length over 2 metres – amazing.
5CW have started to learn how to play chess. Chess is a great game that can help improve memory, planning and problem solving. So far there are two contenders to become the 5CW chess champion – Oliver and Lisa. One thing is for sure, Mrs Crossin won’t be chess champion as she was whooped by Oliver in record time.
On Friday 23rd June the year 5 and 6 classes planned to go on the new Heritage Walk created by the Rotary Club of Devonport South East. Unfortunately, with the high chance of rain, the walk was replaced with an informative presentation given by John Stuart sharing the different aspects of East Devonport including where boats used to moor, the location of the first animal pound, number of shipwrecks off our shores and why East Devonport did not become Devonport’s city centre. After the presentation, students enjoyed a BBQ provided and cooked by the lovely volunteers of the Rotary Club of Devonport South East.
