Reminder: This Friday is Devonport Show Day and a student free day. Enjoy the long weekend.
This year Kinder and Pre Kinder took on the Christmas panel for our school that will be displayed in the mall in Devonport around the Christmas tree. Students expressed their creativity by mark making and enjoyed collaboratively bringing the panel to life. Mark making provides foundations for early drawing and writing and is an important part of the learning in the early years.
We have been thoroughly enjoying springtime in the garden!
We had the pleasure of hosting a playgroup from the CFLC. Having the little ones and their families in the garden was such a delight. We dug, planted, created flower crowns, and of course, played with the worms.
We have been harvesting the broad beans that have been growing through the autumn and winter. The Kinder and Prep students planted them and then had the opportunity to harvest them as well! We have also been preparing all the winter and spring beds for summer crops. We have put in two new raised beds as well.
In addition to sharing some extra spring news this newsletter, I really wanted to share with our school community that the garden expansion/redesign will be starting soon. Please review the plan to see what is planned. If you have any feedback please get in touch.
Year 5CW have been reading and writing about the 11 systems of the human body. We stated off learning about the skeletal systems and can even name some of the major bones. Next, we looked at the muscular system. This system allows bones to move. To show how muscles work we looked at the muscles of a chicken wing and squeezed some to see how it moved the bones.
On Halloween we managed to fit in a mummy competition. Pairs of students had two rolls of toilet paper to dress their partner as a mummy. If you look close you can see Gordan, our resident skeleton.
But as zombies and ghosts know, mummies don’t stay wrapped forever as Noah showed us mummy can burst from their bandages.
Students also got to play table tennis and pickle ball.
Students have been demonstrating their talents while we eat lunch. Some students have shown us how they can do tricks on their skateboards, and we even had a mind reader. On Tuesday 14/11 Lachlan brought in his puppet called Baldie. Lachlan made the puppet out of foam, plastic, table tennis balls, fabric and even a coat hanger. Lachlan could make Baldie’s mouth move and even raise its eyebrows. (Lachlan also performed with Baldie at Love East, where Baldie was very cheeky and referred to the audience as a zoo!)
On Friday the 10th of November Shelby, Mianda, Jonah, Darcy, Edward and Henry from Year 6 represented East Devonport Primary School at the Devonport Readers Cup. In preparation for the cup students had to read several picture books and novels in their own time and respond to one or more of these texts in a creative challenge. Our students chose to create and recite a poem about the book 'Earthquake' by Jackie French, as well as make a diorama in response to 'Flood' by the same author. The student performed admirably on the day and were impressed by the work presented by other schools.
Earthquake
The ground was shaking, and my feet were quaking.
Newcastle began to shake or was it a fake.
As we ate our meal, I had a feeling it was real.
All the suffering and pain was driving even the survivors insane.
The houses went down and broke our town.
Some people were lying flat on their face and others got away like it was a race.
The earth rumbled and the buildings crumbled.
The survivors drove fast like it was a rocket blast.
Buildings break things fall over me like it was a rake.
People homeward bound lost people need to be found.
It shook the ground and we all frowned.
There were wounds all over me but at least we were free.
So, we fled the city what a pity.
And that’s the end now we know why we said goodbye.
Managing Safeguarding Risks in our schools
Our staff play a key role in keeping students safe by proactively monitoring any risks.
The Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) recently released new Safeguarding Risk Management resources for our schools to assist with this.
These resources are designed to help us continuously identify, prevent and reduce risks to students of child abuse and harm, and support our school to be a safe environment where every child and young person can thrive and grow.
During this term we have been developing a Safeguarding Risk Management plan for our school. The plan sets out the risks that we can identify, and most importantly, how we can reduce them.
As parents and carers, you play an important role helping us to identify safeguarding risks in our school, and I’m sure you may also have ideas on how we can reduce these risks to keep students safe.
If you or your child/children have any questions, concerns or wish to report any incidents relating to child abuse or harm, I encourage you to reach out to me or a trusted staff member. We welcome your views and any feedback.
The Tell Someone website is also another useful source of information if you are worried that a child may be at risk of harm or is being sexually abused or groomed.
If you have any concerns, the website gives clear information about what to look for, how to make a report and who to speak to.
For further information on the work being done on safeguarding in our school, please visit DECYP's website.

Devonport Country Club - Junior Golf Scholarships
Devonport Country Club are in the fortunate position of being able to offer FREE junior girls’ golf scholarships. We have obtained funding from The Australian Golf Foundation (AGF) to support six lucky teenage girls to pursue the sport of golf. No previous skill necessary. Scholarships are open to girls aged 9 to 16. Girls new to golf may also be engaged in this program should they demonstrate a commitment to learning the sport. A willingness to learn a new skill. “This is a terrific opportunity”, said Helen Plaister, DCC Scholarship coordinator.
“Not only will girls receive 24 coaching sessions with Alex Hamilton PGA Professional but also a one-year junior club membership that carries playing rights, to ensure girls can participate in club competitions and obtain a handicap”. The Scholarship program is part of a national campaign to get more girls playing golf. Along with over 160 other golf facilities across Australia, DCC will be working closely with golf’s national body Golf Australia throughout 2024.
“All we ask is that applicants display a desire and willingness to learn and therefore improve golf skills, obtain a handicap, play in club competitions (or at least social play) and engage in any extra-curricular activity that fosters friendships between scholarship holders”.
A total of 6 scholarships will be available at DCC for 2024.
For further information and to apply, please contact: Helen Plaister (DCC Junior Girls Coordinator), email: helen.plaister1950@gmail.com or, mobile; 0488233905 and leave a message.
